Impressions of the Scala dei Turchi

The Scala dei Turchi is one of Sicily's most striking natural wonders. This gleaming white rocky promontory has been sculpted into a vast flight of stairs by nothing more than the wind. The origin of its name "staircase" is obvious, but the Sicilians named it "Turkish" after the pirates who used to threaten their southern coast. In reality the pirates weren't just Turkish, but came from all over North Africa as well. As you can see from the Trip Tips photos below, the Scala dei Turchi is safe and peaceful nowadays!
